US Election: Ex-US President Barack Obama trash-talks Donald Trump in campaign speech for Joe Biden

Former President Barack Obama has ripped into successor Donald Trump - saying he won't protect the US from COVID-19 because "he cannot even take the basic steps to protect himself".

Obama was campaigning for Joe Biden, who leads Trump in nearly all national polls - but with two weeks until the US votes, that margin is narrowing.

For four years, they were best mates and called each other brothers - but now, Obama is scaling up the campaign to get Biden his old job.

"Joe knows the first job as President is to protect us from all threats - foreign, domestic, and microscopic," he said.

Obama officially endorsed his former Vice-President in April, but Wednesday (US time) was his first rally on the campaign - and he immediately took aim at Trump.

His speech came just hours after reports emerged that Trump holds a secret Chinese bank account.

"Can you imagine if I had had a secret Chinese bank account, when I was running for re-election?" he asked the crowds. "They would have called me Beijing Barry!"

Obama told supporters the presidency was no reality show, but that Trump's ratings were going down.

Obama was in Pennsylvania, and encouraged all Black Americans to vote - a key demographic Hillary Clinton failed to energise when she was the Democrats' presidential nominee in 2016.

"It's the cool thing and the right thing to vote," he said.

Meanwhile, Donald Trump arrived in North Carolina in the past few hours. The key state is critical to re-election, and is too close to call just yet.

"He's to bring jobs back to this country, and I'm really excited about that," one supporter said at a rally.

Trump and Biden will have another TV debate on Friday (NZ time) - with Trump expected to focus on Biden's son Hunter and the family's relationship with China.

Meanwhile, Trump's lawyer Rudy Giuliani has reportedly been caught out by Sacha Baron Cohen character Borat in a stunt shot for his latest movie.

Giuliani is shown in a hotel room following an interview with an actress playing a journalist. The former New York Mayor appears to have his hand down his pants.

Guilani says the shots are fabricated, and he was merely tucking himself in after removing recording equipment.
