US President Donald Trump leaves hospital to 'surprise patriots' after COVID-19 treatment

Donald Trump has briefly left the Walter Reed military hospital where he was being treated for COVID-19 to "pay a little surprise" to his supporters.

The US President was taken to the hospital out of concern for his health after he was diagnosed with the coronavirus on Friday.

But a video posted to Facebook on Monday shows the President preparing to take a short trip outside.

"We're getting great reports from the doctors. This is an incredible hospital, Walter Reed. The work they do is just absolutely amazing and I want to thank them all, the nurses, the doctors, everybody here," Trump says.

"I also think we're going to pay a little surprise to some of the patriots that we have out on the street and they've been out there for a long time."

A subsequent video published by White House correspondent Philip Crowther shows Trump driving by his supporters outside the Walter Reed military hospital.

CNN's Jeremy Diamond, who was waiting outside Walter Reed, described it as a "stunning scene".

"Initially they started to block off a part of the street right here in front of Walter Reed national military medical center. And then the President's motorcade proceeded to drive down one side of the street where you have several dozen of the president's supporters," he told the network.

"The motorcade drove by at a pretty slow pace and the supporters here for the President went wild as they saw this happen."

Trump has returned to Walter Reed, according to a statement from White House deputy press secretary Judd Deere.

"President Trump took a short, last-minute motorcade ride to wave to his supporters outside and has now returned to the Presidential Suite inside Walter Reed," Deere said.
