White woman who called police on black birdwatcher made second false report to police

The white woman charged with filing a false police report after a dispute with a black man made a second, previously unreported, call where she falsely claimed the man "tried to assault her".

Amy Cooper made global headlines in May when birdwatcher Christian Cooper (no relation) filmed her threatening to call the police on him for asking her to restrain her dog in New York's Central Park.

Mr Cooper approached her to ask her to leash her dog, as it was in an area which required it. Ms Cooper refused, became irate, and phoned the police.

"I'm going to tell them there's an African American threatening my life," she can be heard telling Mr Cooper in footage of the incident he posted to social media.

During the call she appears panicked, and claims Mr Cooper is "threatening" her and her dog while repeating that Mr Cooper is African American.

The incident occurred on the same day unarmed black man George Floyd was killed after a white police officer knelt on his neck for almost nine minutes.

Ms Cooper appeared in court on Wednesday charged with falsely reporting an incident - she did not enter a plea, reports the BBC.

Prosecutors revealed in her second unreported call to police, Ms Cooper claimed Mr Cooper had "tried to assault her".

Manhattan District Attorney Cy Vance Jr said in a statement that Ms Cooper "engaged in racist criminal conduct" by falsely accusing a black man of assault.

"Fortunately, no one was injured or killed in the police response to Ms Cooper's hoax."

When police turned up Ms Cooper admitted no one had touched her.

Filing a false report is punishable by up to one year in jail, reports the BBC.

She later apologised, saying she had "overreacted". The 41-year-old was fired from her job, and rehomed her dog after the video of her behaviour went viral.
