Coronavirus: Samoa records first case of COVID-19

Samoa, one of the last countries on Earth untouched by the coronavirus pandemic, has recorded its first case.

But the man, who tested positive on Wednesday night, was negative in a follow-up test conducted on Thursday morning, the Samoa Observer reports.

The man, a sailor, reportedly arrived in Samoa last Friday on a repatriation flight. He was in a quarantine facility when the first test came back positive.

He's now in an isolation ward at Tupua Tamasese Motootua hospital, the Observer reports.

Prime Minister Tuilaepa Aiono Sailele Malielegaoi called for calm, and said Samoa would not be taking any chances.

"Let us keep the faith and wear masks and wash our hands as advised," he said on Thursday morning.

It's estimated there were possibly more than 400 people on the same flight as the man, RNZ reported, including 16 other sailors.

The only countries now without any reported cases are Tuvalu, Turkmenistan, Tonga, Palau, North Korea, Niue, Nauru, Kiribati, Micronesia and the Cook Islands. Eight are Pacific Island nations and the other two ruled by dictators, whose official figures are likely unreliable.
