Coronavirus: Second positive COVID-19 case recorded in Samoa

Samoa has recorded its second case of COVID-19.

A man in his 70s who passed through New Zealand earlier this month has tested positive and been placed in isolation with his wife, who tested negative, according to the Samoa Observer.

They arrived in New Zealand on November 12 before flying to Samoa, which recorded its first case of the deadly virus just over a week ago in person on the same flight.

Samoa's equivalent of our Ashley Bloomfield - Director-General of Health Leausa Toleafoa Dr Take Naseri - confirmed the positive case at a news conference on Friday morning.

The patient isn't showing visible signs of the infection, but has underlying conditions which put him at risk of complications.

Everyone on that repatriation flight - which passed through Auckland on its way to Apia - has had another seven days added to their quarantine requirements, the Observer reported.

COVID-19 is far more deadly for the elderly than other age groups.

Until this month, Samoa was one of only a handful of countries without any confirmed coronavirus infections.

Globally there have been 61 million confirmed cases and 1.43 million deaths.
