Coronavirus: Victoria crushes the curve, totally eliminates COVID-19

For the first time since February, there are no known active cases of COVID-19 in the Australian state which bore the brunt of the country's second wave.

Victoria on Tuesday said the final patient known to have been infected with the virus had been discharged from hospital.

"This is a very significant day, and every Victorian can be proud of the part they've played in beating the second wave," said state Premier Daniel Andrews.

The man's wife also had the disease, and was discharged last week.

The last time there were no active cases in Victoria was February 29, the Department of Health and Human Services said. In early August the state was recording hundreds of new cases every day, and went into the equivalent of a New Zealand alert level 4 lockdown to flatten the curve. At its peak there were more than 7000 people in the state confirmed to have the disease.

Thanks to the strict lockdown however the number of new infections recorded each day plummeted, and it's now been a few weeks since any new cases were picked up. On Monday the state lifted most restrictions on movement.

"It doesn't mean the threat is gone, but certainly a milestone considering we had 7880 active cases on 11 August," said Deputy Chief Medical Officer Allen Cheng.

The outbreak was traced back to poor health practises at the state's quarantine hotels, including equipment shortages and private security contractors working across multiple sites, even if they were symptomatic.

Victoria's zero figure doesn't just apply to the community - there are literally no known cases in the whole state. Victoria currently has no quarantine system set up - the only people allowed into the state are people travelling from elsewhere in Australia, with no international flights allowed. A new - and hopefully improved - quarantine system is set to go live in December, reopening the state to international travel.

"This is far from over, even with this run of zero days, no active cases, very strong testing performance and people who are doing the right thing," said Andrews.

"Until a vaccine arrives, this is going to be something that is with us for the foreseeable future."

Since its first case on January 24, Victoria has had 20,345 confirmed cases and 819 deaths. New Zealand, which has a functioning managed isolation and quarantine system, has 53 active cases - 49 in isolation and quarantine and four in the community. New Zealand has had 2031 confirmed and suspected cases and 25 deaths.
