Donald Trump still asking for donations to fight 'radical left' trying to 'steal the election'

Incumbent US President Donald Trump has made a last-ditch appeal to his supporters for donations, continuing to claim without evidence Democrats are trying to "steal" the election.

Trump claimed election victory on Wednesday night (NZ time), despite millions of votes still needing to be counted. He told supporters in a speech he believed the vote-counting was fraudulent.

At the same time, his campaign was doubling down on the claims in last-minute fundraising emails to supporters.

"DEMOCRATS PLAN TO STEAL THE ELECTION," says one of the emails, shared on Twitter by Fox News producer Pat Ward.

"President Trump needs your help. You've been there every step of the way these last few years."

The email goes on to make the unsubstantiated claim that Democrats will try "to steal this election".

"We're emailing you now to ask for you to step up ONE LAST TIME and DEFEND YOUR PRESIDENT.

"They can't stand the thought of America REJECTING their candidate, so they'll do whatever it takes to manipulate the results."

US media is reporting the Trump campaign has now filed lawsuits in the states of Georgia, Pennsylvania, and Michigan to halt vote counts, arguing that officials had failed to allow fair access to counting sites.

His campaign also said it would request a recount in Wisconsin.

"We want the law to be used in a proper manner," Trump said on Tuesday night. "So we'll be going to the US Supreme Court."

He provided no evidence to back up his claim of fraud and did not explain how he would fight the results at the Supreme Court.
