Israeli cabinet minister Tzachi Hanegbi said on Saturday (local time) he had "no clue" who was behind the killing of a top Iranian nuclear scientist.

Mohsen Fakhrizadeh, who was suspected of masterminding a secret nuclear bomb programme, was assassinated during an ambush near Tehran on Friday.

Armed assassins fired on Fakhrizadeh's car before he died of injuries in hospital, Iranian state media reported.

The military adviser to Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei blamed Israel for the assassination of Fakhrizadeh and vowed to retaliate for his killing.

But Hanegbi, a confidant of Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, told N12's Meet the Press: "I have no clue who did it."

"It's not that my lips are sealed because I'm being responsible, I really have no clue," Hanegbi said.

There are now concerns the attack may provoke confrontation between Iran and its foes in the final weeks of US President Donald Trump's term in office.
