'Like a cartoon': Another art restoration blunder in Europe compared to 'potato head'

A botched restoration of a statue in Spain might just be a new contender for the world's worst-ever.

The statue, in the Spanish city of Palencia which depicts a woman smiling, is part of a heritage building and critics say its restored face now resembles a "potato head".

According to as.com, a Spanish news website, the piece was restored after being damaged amid other restoration work on the heritage building.

Antonio Guzmán Capel, a local painter, said on Facebook the newly restored statue "looks like a cartoon character", while The Art Newspaper has dubbed it "the potato head of Palencia".

Spain's Professional Association of Restorers and Conservators say the restoration wasn't carried out by a professional.

"Restoring is not repairing, serious interventions must follow criteria," Llanos Argudo, a conservator based in Valencia, wrote on Twitter.

It follows a series of other botched restorations including the "Monkey Christ" incident in 2012, where a restored painting of Christ was left resembling a monkey and made headlines around the world.

And a painting of the Virgin Mary also suffered from restoration ridicule earlier this year, when restorers left her face completely disfigured.
