At least seven adults and one teenager have reportedly been injured after a shooting at a US shopping mall on Friday (local time).

A Police dispatcher told Fox News they had been responding to an "active situation" at Mayfair Mall in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin around 3pm.

People who work inside the mall told Good Morning America that they heard several gunshots ring out in quick succession.

"We couldn't tell if there was one gun or two guns, we don't know if the gunman is still in the mall because we are in lockdown... They are trying to clear the mall now," a shop worker told the news outlet.

Witness, Jill Wooley, said she was inside the mall when gunshots rang out.

"The very first shot, my immediate thought was it sounded like one of the floor fixtures in Macy's hit the floor," she told CBS.

"But in that same second, I knew right away it was a gunshot and they just kept coming one right after the other.

"I think we're all born with it... We've all been exposed to public shootings like this. I think all of us have thought of what we would do in a situation like this."

The local mayor Dennis McBride told ABC News that none of the eight victims' injuries appear to be life-threatening and they are being taken to the hospital.

The perpetrator is "at large," he said.

About 75 officers are currently at the mall, and the FBI told ABC News they had officers responding.

"We are disheartened and angered that our guests and tenants were subject to this violent incident today," Brookfield Properties, Mayfair's Mall property management company, said in a statement.

"We are thankful for our partners at the Wauwatosa Police Department and we are cooperating with them as their investigation develops."

The Milwaukee County Transit System tweeted that buses are currently unable to enter the shopping centre property due to an "emergency incident".
