A North Korean gymnast has reportedly flung himself over the border into South Korea to escape.

The man in his 20s surrendered to the South Korean military after they discovered he had breached the border and was detained without incident, the Sydney Morning Herald reports.

He has asked for asylum, which has prompted an investigation into his claims and how he managed to escape North Korea.

The BBC's Seoul correspondent says authorities were so amazed at his reported feat they asked him to demonstrate twice how he managed to leap the three-metre fence.

His escape has sparked concern, as the high security demilitarised zone is fortified by fences, minefields and armed guards.

Just 33,000 people have escaped North Korea since the 90s, with most opting to creep out via China.
