A call to Montreal police which caused heavily armed officers to rush to the offices of a video-game company was a hoax.

Heavily armed police rushed to the Ubisoft office in Montreal on Saturday morning (NZ time) where employees had barricaded themselves on the rooftop.

The police service said on Twitter officers were responding to a 911 call and that no injuries had been reported.

It said "specialised" officers were "inspecting the premises".

Hours later the police had safely evacuated employees and deemed the call that sparked the investigation a hoax. "No threat has been identified for now," the police service said. "

"We are currently evacuating the building."

Ubisoft is the company behind wildly popular games like Assassin's Creed, Prince of Persia  and the Far Cry series. It's based in France but has offices across the world.
