An Australian man has shocked social media users by sharing a photo of a massive huntsman spider on the wall of his home.

Cairns resident Jake Gray stunned users in a spider identification Facebook group by saying he'd "been watching her grow over the last year".

"Check out this big girl. Been watching her grow over last year," he wrote. "Cairns north Queensland. The mighty huntsman."

Several commenters on the post said it is a holconia immanis, or banded huntsman, which is one of Australia's largest spiders and is found in warmer parts on the country's east coast.

Banded huntsman grow a body length of up to 4.5 centimetres and a leg span of 16 centimetres.

The image caused a stir in the Facebook group, attracting over 1500 reactions and nearly 800 shares.

"That's a lil hardcore for me. She's huge," one person commented. "If I walked out in the morning and saw that I'd have kittens I reckon."

"Bruh that's the spider's house now," another said.

"I'm not scared of huntsman but far out if one this size came crawling down the wall I may need a fresh set of undies," a third wrote.

Others joked about the spider needing to pay rent due to its large size.

"Goodness, I hope it helps with some bills," one said.
