A nurse in the United Kingdom working overtime caring for coronavirus patients had her car stolen by thieves from the hospital's car park.

Janine Morgan bought the £8500 (NZ$16,100) Ford Fiesta just one month earlier after years of saving up for it, the Mirror reports.

After working her normal 10-hour shift, she offered to do an extra three hours to help her tired colleagues.

When Morgan stepped out to call her mum Barbara to tell her she was working late, her car was still parked at Stepping Hill Hospital in Stockport. But when she returned to drive home, it was gone.

She told the Mirror if she had left on time she would still have her car, but she "couldn't leave my colleagues" after the "horrendous day" they'd all had.

"I had to break bad news to a lady with a life-limiting illness who couldn't have her family with her," Morgan said.

"Another patient collapsed and my team helped revive her. Then a gentleman died and I consoled the nurse who had been at his side all day."

The hospital's security footage shows a couple driving into the car park in their own car and the man using a device to open Morgan's keyless-entry Fiesta.

"I was in shock," Morgan said. "I just couldn't believe someone would target a hospital to steal a car… How do they sleep at night?"

Morgan, whose dad died from COVID-19 in March, said nursing is hard at the best of times but the pandemic has brought it to "another level".

Police later found Morgan's car dumped and fear it will be a write-off.

Morgan said she hopes her car insurance will pay for a replacement.
