The Bidens will be adding another furry companion to their family when they move into the White House next year.

US President-elect Joe Biden and his wife Jill told CBS Sunday Morning they will be getting a cat after his inauguration on January 20.

"President-elect Joe Biden and his wife Dr Biden won't just be bringing their German shepherds, Major and Champ to the White House," CBS Sunday Morning tweeted on Saturday.

"The Bidens tell us exclusively that soon they'll be joined by a cat.

"Jill had already mentioned an interest in getting a cat during a Fox News interview in September.

"Well I'd love to get a cat," she told Fox 5's Angie Goff.

"I love having animals around the house."

Donald Trump's presidency marked the first time in US history the President did not have pets at the White House.

Barack and Michelle Obama owned two Portuguese water dogs, Bo and Sunny, following their move to the White House.

George W. Bush had three dogs and a black cat named India during his presidency from 2001-2009.

And Bill Clinton moved into the White House with Socks, a tuxedo cat, and was later joined by a labrador retriever, Buddy.
