US election: Patrick Gower on why the US election is still too close to call

Democratic candidate Joe Biden is nearing the 270 votes needed to win the US election, but Newshub national correspondent Patrick Gower says he shouldn't claim victory just yet.

Even though votes are still being counted, Joe Biden and his deputy Kamala Harris launched a Presidential transition website on Wednesday (local time).

The website, buildbackbetter.com, hopes to keep people informed of what Biden and Harris will do in the weeks following the election - if they win.

"The transition team will continue preparing at full speech so that the Biden-Harris Administration can hit the ground running on day one," the website says.

But Newshub National Correspondent Patrick Gower says although votes are edging Biden's way, he actually hasn't won it yet.

"Donald Trump's popular vote has gone up 69 million - 69 million people have endorsed Trump, endorsed Trump in this country," Gower told The AM Show on Friday.

"What we've got is a very very divided situation, it's amazing to see such a big country just literally divided right down the middle in every way.

"Who knows what Biden will be able to do when he gets in there, it's going to be a totally different world."

Gower made it clear that even if Biden were elected, Trump still holds the role as President of the United States until January 2021.

"The other thing that Kiwis need to remember if it does happen, Donald Trump is still in office as the President of the United States in what's called the 'lame duck' period right through to the inauguration in January next year.

"Now Donald Trump is many things, but he is not a lame duck, it would not be a lame-duck presidency from Donald Trump from those few months - it would be interesting to see the kind of stuff that he does in those few months that he would have."
