US Election: Protests kick off in Detroit, crowd attempts to disrupt ballot-counting process

Protests have kicked off in Detroit, Michigan as a large crowd attempts to disrupt the ballot-counting process by storming a vote-tally centre, with footage on social media showing the large crowd chanting "stop the count" outside the venue.

It follows the filing of a lawsuit by Trump's reelection campaign to halt the counting of ballots in Michigan "until meaningful access has been granted" to observe the process.

"We also demand to review those ballots which are opened and counted while we did not have meaningful access," the campaign said in a statement, claiming it had been denied access to "numerous counting locations".

In a big projection, CNN has now said Democratic rival Joe Biden will win the battleground state, the first major news outlet to make the call.

Yet supporters of the Republican candidate are not going down without a fight, a large crowd of protesters attempting to push their way into Detroit's TCF Center - where absentee ballots are being counted - and confronting guards outside the venue in a "tense" stand-off, according to NBC correspondent Steve Patterson.

"They're being blocked by guards at the door," he tweeted on Wednesday afternoon (US time). "Pizza boxes are pushed against the window to obstruct view. It's tense."

In footage posted by Patterson, guards yell for the tightly-packed protesters to "step back". It appears there is a brief confrontation over masks, although the audio is unclear.

Business news outlet Bloomberg also shared footage from the TFC Center, showing the crowd congregating outside the hall to chant "stop the count".

According to Detroit Free Pressofficials had informed dozens of challengers they could not reenter the vote-tally room due to it being over-capacity. Protesters pounded on the doors and windows, continuing to shout, 'Let us in' and 'Stop the count' as a handful of tables continued to tally ballots. Police were reportedly present.

As reported by the Independent, the political affiliation of the protesters is not immediately clear, although Bloomberg has labelled the crowd as "Trump supporters".

Meanwhile, a man has been filmed interrupting a Nevada official's press conference by making unfounded claims of electoral fraud. The masked man, clad in a T-shirt branded with the slogan, 'BBQ, Beer, Freedom', loudly declares "the media is covering it up".

"We want our freedom for the world, give us our freedom Joe Biden... Biden's covering up this election, he's stealing it!" he yells at the reporters as the cameras roll.
