A cliff has collapsed on top of a popular campsite in the Canary Islands, Spain, with fears people are trapped beneath the rumble.

Holidaymakers from the Valle Gran Rey Resort on La Gomera watched on in horror as they noticed the cliff begin to crumble and eventually crash on top of a cluster of caravans on Argaga Beach.

A state of emergency has been declared on the island as emergency services scramble to see if anyone is trapped, with witnesses recalling seeing people walking under the cliff prior to the collapse, Metro UK reports.

Five stranded campers have already been rescued via helicopter with firefighters, paramedics, police, civil protection volunteers, civil guard, mountain rescue, and police dogs all joining the search.

According to Metro UK, there are no reports of missing persons, and the president of La Gomera is “optimistic” there will be no further victims as campers were evacuated as soon as rocks started to crumble

Caravans at the site are now covered in a blanket of dust and debris, some completely covered by rubble.

The beach is now closed due to fears more rocks will collapse as several cracks can be seen on the cliff face.
