A woman has been arrested after smashing hundreds of bottles of alcohol at a UK supermarket and throwing a bottle of gin at a fellow shopper.

Police were called to an Aldi supermarket in Hertfordshire around 2:30pm on Wednesday afternoon (local time) after reports of the incident.

Footage obtained by The Sun shows a woman hauling bottles of wine, beer and spirits, and smashing them onto the ground.

"I've never seen anything like this," a man said in the video.

"It's mental, absolutely mental," another said. "Why though? I don't understand why."

The woman, wearing a hoodie, backpack and mustard track pants was bleeding on her right hand as she continued smashing through the bottles.

TV presenter Lee Clark, who was in the store at the time, told The Sun she smashed through at least 500 bottles.

"It was extraordinary - I've never seen anything like that before in my life," he told Sun Online.

"She didn't say a word the whole time and had a very vacant look in her face."

"A man told her to calm down so she threw a bottle of gin which hit him in the leg."

Police officers arrived at the scene soon after and arrested the woman.

She was taken to the hospital for treatment for her injuries and is now in police custody.
