An Australian woman suffered a horrific fright after finding a huge spider lurking inside the door handle of her car.

Christine Jones had returned to her car in Armidale, New South Wales for the first time in a week when she noticed something large and hairy.

Jones shared her photo on the Australian Spider Identification Facebook page and added she saw the beast at the last moment.

"[I] thought it was a huge caterpillar at first," she said. "Haven't used my car for a week."

Facebook users were shocked by the large spider.

"OMG… I would have had a heart attack!!!" One user commented.

"Time for a new car," another wrote.

One person even commented: "It's beautiful!"

The spider has been identified as a banded huntsman - a large, grey to brown spider with striped bands on its legs.

Despite their large and hairy appearance, huntsman spiders are not considered dangerous, according to the Australian Museum website.

"They will usually run away rather than be aggressive," its website says.
