COVID-19: Eswatini Prime Minister first world leader to die of the virus

The Prime Minister of Eswatini has become the first world leader to die after contracting COVID-19.

Ambrose Dlamini, 52, tested positive for the virus in mid-November after developing mild symptoms.

He was transferred to hospital in neighbouring South Africa in early December but died on Sunday.

Dlamini's death was announced by Deputy Prime Minister Themba Masuku in a statement.

"Their Majesties have commanded that I inform the nation of the sad and untimely passing away of His Excellency the Prime Minister Ambrose Mandvulo Dlamini.

"His Excellency passed on this afternoon (Sunday) while under medical care in a hospital in South Africa.

"Government in collaboration with the family will keep the nation informed of subsequent arrangements."

Dlamini was appointed Prime Minister of Eswatini in October 2018. Prior to his role, he worked in the banking and telecommunications sector.

"Despite the challenge of COVID-19, Prime Minister Ambrose Mandvulo Dlamini continued to lead His Majesty's Government with vigour in 2020," Eswatini Government's Facebook page wrote.

"May your soul rest in peace, Your Excellency."

Eswatini, a country in South Africa has reported over 6700 coronavirus cases and 127 deaths among its population of 1.2 million people.
