An animated map shared to Twitter shows the devastating extent of the US COVID-19 surge since October.

The map, posted by US epidemiologist and health economist Eric Feigi-Ding visually displays just how quickly the virus took over the country.

Feigi-Ding captioned the map; "We haven't even seen the worst yet. We are so damn screwed."

The GIF shows the US slowly turning from green to a deep red, the colours representing the number of cases per country per 24,000 residents in the past 14 days.

Feigi-Ding goes on to plead with the US writing that they are "scaring the Canadian folks," and to "please mask up."

Twitter users have responded in horror

"You saying 'we are so damn screwed' scares the crap out of me. I don't know why we all could not do what was necessary to slow the spread," One user said.

"I'm not leaving my house until I get the vaccination. I'm not kidding," said another.

Others brainstormed ways to fix the crisis.

"America needs to lockdown at this stage masks and sanitizer isn't enough."

"I hate to say this, but at this point, we need martial law."

The US has suffered 2000 COVID-19 deaths per day for the past two days with predictions they could begin to lose 3000 a day - roughly the same amount that died in 9/11 attacks.

New cases hit 200,000 on Wednesday with hospitalisations fast approaching 100,000 and deaths hitting 276,000.

The UK gave emergency approval to Pfizer's COVID-19 vaccine this week, a sign the US may soon follow suit.
