US President-elect Joe Biden has been given his official presidential Twitter account, starting with zero followers.

Biden's new account @PresElectBiden, will change to the official @POTUS (President of the United States) on his inauguration day on January 20.

The account has already gained 721k followers.

"Folks - this will be the account for my official duties as President," he tweeted on Friday.

"At 12:01pm on January 20th, it will become @POTUS. Until then, I'll be using @JoeBiden."

The White House, President, Vice President, First Lady and White House Press Secretary will all inherit their new institutional usernames, Twitter wrote in a statement.

@Transition46 will become @WhiteHouse, @PresElectBiden will become @POTUS, @SenKamalaHarris will become @VP, @FlotusBiden will become @FLOTUS, and @PressSecPsaki will become @PressSec.

Although the institutional accounts will not automatically retain the followers, people who currently follow relevant accounts will receive a notification giving them an option to follow the new ones.
