Nancy Pelosi has called on US Vice President Mike Pence to remove US President Donald Trump from office by invoking the 25th amendment, adding that Congress may be prepared to impeach Trump if it doesn't happen.

Pelosi, Speaker of the US House of Representatives, also called for the resignation of the chief of the Capitol Police Steven Sund saying she had "received notice" that he would be submitting his resignation

Speaking on Friday Pelosi desired the Capitol riot as a "horror".

"The gleeful desecration of the US capitol which is the temple of our American democracy and the violence targeting congress are horrors that will forever stain our nation's history."

Pelosi said the riots were made worse by the fact Trump himself incited the events.

"Instigated by the President of the United States that's why it's such a stain."

She then called for Pence to remove the president by "immediately invoking the 25th amendment," adding that Congress would impeach Trump if it didn't happen.

"If the Vice President and cabinet do not act the Congress may be prepared to move forward with impeachment, that is the overwhelming sentiment of my caucus and the American people by the way."

The 25th amendment relates to Presidential succession and allows the Vice President to become president if the President dies, resigns, or is removed from office.

Alongside asking the chief of Capitol police to resign she went on to criticise the FBI asking what was the "shortcoming" in their intelligence, and the department of defence asking why it took so long for them to respond or to anticipate the need for the National Guard.

She commended the Capitol police who did act "bravely" saying they deserved "gratitude."
