Eight people have been injured in New York City after a bendy bus half-plummeted 15 metres off a bridge on Friday.

The New York City Fire Department (FDNY) tweeted a harrowing image of the bus hanging off the edge of Washington Bridge in the Bronx.

"We assessed and treated a total of eight patients from this accident," New York City Fire Department Deputy Chief Paul Hopper said.

"The bus fell approximately 50 feet (15 metres) onto the access road. The patients suffered injuries consistent with a fall from such a great height."

New York City council member Mark Levine said emergency services closed off the entire area after this "horrible accident".

The FDNY said they were making sure fuel and other hazardous materials were secured until the bus could be pulled onto the roadway safely.

The cause of the accident is not clear.
