US Capitol violence: In pictures

Scenes unseen in the history of US democracy played out in Washington DC on Thursday (NZ time), as protesters - or insurrectionists, as President-elect Joe Biden and others have called them - stormed the Capitol building.

The chaos is ongoing, with many pointing the finger directly at the outgoing US President - who last year refused to commit to a peaceful transfer - for stoking the violence.

Here are some of the incredible images from a day that marked the end of more than 200 years of the peaceful transfer of power in the world's oldest democracy.
