A US man has been charged with murder for reportedly shooting his mother in the head before dancing with his sister next to her body.

Police allege Mike Lopez, 23, walked into his family dining room where his mother was seated with his two sisters - one aged 14 and the other 17.

He then pointed a shotgun directly at his mother Victoria Ramirez.

"Mike turned towards his 14-year-old sister and they gave each other a head nod," reads a police affidavit. The sister then locked herself in a bathroom as Lopez looked at their mother.

According to the charging documents, Ramirez told her son "I know you're going to kill me, and I love you," before he allegedly shot her, killing her instantly.

Deseret News reports Lopez's 14-year-old sister stroked her mothers hair before being grabbed by her brother. The documents say the pair then danced next to their dead mother as the 17-year-old sister fled the house to a neighbour's property where she called the police.

When police arrived they found Lopez in a bathtub with the gun leaning against it. Upon his arrest he began to cry, telling police "someone" made him do it.

The 17-year-old girl told police Lopez had been acting strangely and was providing marijuana to the younger sister.

"She stated Mike has been acting really strange lately where he has been meditating a lot where he claims to go to different dimensions and talking about a lot of bad people."

The 14-year-old sister was also acting strangely, police said.

She reportedly told police she and Lopez had been "together a lot" and taking turns sleeping so they can "watch over one another".

Lopez is facing one count of murder and one of domestic violence in the presence of a child. He is also charged with purchasing, transporting, possessing and using a firearm as a restricted person.
