Around 200 coffins have toppled into the ocean near Genoa, Italy, after a cliff collapse.

Two chapels have also been lost in the fall, after the seaside cemetery crumbled into the Ligurian sea below.

Footage of the event has emerged on social media, including a video which shows the moment the graveyard tumbles onto the rocks below.

According to the BBC, workers in the area saw cracks in the cliff face, and notified officials about the potential risk

"The area had been cordoned off because in the last few days there had been strange creaking sounds," local councillor Tino Revello told Italian news source Ansa.

Local Mayor Francesco Olivari told CNN it was an "unimaginable catastrophe" in the area where coastal erosion is a common issue.

A containment fence has been placed in the bay, to prevent losing more of the 100-year-old cemetery to the ocean.

Emergency services are in the process of helping with recovery efforts, with CNN reporting only ten coffins have been retrieved so far.
