An Australian consumer group has named a popular retro-styled fridge "the worst" it's ever tested.

The Smeg brand fridge scored poorly across consumer advocacy group Choice's criteria which measure temperature stability, evenness and response to outside temperature - all crucial for keeping food fresh.

Choice's fridge expert Ashley Iredale says it's "the biggest shocker we've seen in our labs".

The 510-litre fridge scored zero out of 100 for temperature stability.

"One of its biggest problems with it was its appalling temperature fluctuations. We saw a variation of more than 5 degrees in the fresh food compartment and a staggering 11 degrees in the freezer," he is quoted as saying by Stuff.

"You might get a 1950s style aesthetic from this fridge but you'll also get the 1950s level of performance."

Overall, the appliance scored a "staggeringly low" overall score of 22 percent.

These results were "even more appalling" when compared to the price.

The fridge retails for $6999 but is not currently listed on Smeg's New Zealand site.
