A British woman is dead after being mauled to death by a pet dog.

Keira Ladlow, 25, was lying in bed at her house in Birmingham, England on Friday (local time) when the dog, which reportedly belonged to a relative, launched the attack.

"Sadly, a woman aged 25 was found dead at the scene after suffering serious injuries believed to have been caused by a family dog which also lived at the address," a West Midlands police spokesman told BirminghamLive. "No one else was in the property at the time, and the woman's family has signed the dog, believed to be a staffordshire cross, over to police."

A reported relative of Ladlow's, Abeygail Barrett, said on Facebook that the dog had been rescued several years ago.

"Sometimes dogs are rescued with all good intentions but their past can make them tragically unpredictable," Barrett wrote, as reported by The Sun.

According to local media, the dog was taken away from the scene by authorities and will be destroyed.
