An elderly Australian man lay dead in his car outside a Perth supermarket for four days before anyone noticed.

According to 7NEWS, his decomposing body was discovered outside the busy shop in Perth's Northern suburbs on Thursday by a mother who noticed an unmistakable stench.

"I just can’t believe at nine o'clock this morning that I was the one who had to advise the staff," Melissa Sprylan said.

"There was blood, quite a considerable amount going into the drain."

CCTV footage shows the man entered the store four days prior before exiting and getting in his car, only to slump over against the passenger seat and stay there.

The man's 4WD was parked right outside the entrance to the Herdsman Fresh Supermarket which sees thousands of customers every day.

Heavily tinted windows meant it was difficult to see what was going on inside the car - workers only reporting an unknown bad smell on Wednesday.

Police and firefighters covered the car with sheets while they retrieved the body. The car was then removed from the site.

Sprylan said she was "still jittery" after making the discovery.

Witnesses adding the situation was "just tragic."

"This is not the way to go."

Police are still working to confirm the man's identity so his age remains unknown, it's also unknown whether he's been reported missing.

Police told 7NEWS the cause of death is still being determined and was not being treated as suspicious.
