A 12-year-old boy was critically injured after being brutally stabbed at a Pennsylvania McDonald's while waiting in line with his family on Saturday.

Charles Edward Turner, 51, has been arrested after he allegedly tackled the boy from behind before lacerating his neck with a craft knife. Local news station KDKA reported the boy was hospitalised in critical condition but is now stable.

Pittsburgh Public Safety Department deputy information officer Cara Cruz said the family was only in the restaurant for a short time.

"It's really quite a tragic thing on a beautiful Saturday downtown," she said, as reported by KDKA.

Local police said Turner is facing several charges including attempted homicide, aggravated assault, and resisting arrest.

"Pittsburgh police have arrested Charles Edward Turner, 51, in connection with a stabbing incident at the McDonald's in the 500 block of Liberty Ave just after 2pm on March 20, 2021," the department said in a statement. "Turner is being held at Allegheny County Jail."
