A wanted man with a gun and a large cache of ammunition has been arrested near the home of US Vice President Kamala Harris in Washington DC.

Paul Murray, 31, was apprehended by Secret Service agents outside the grounds of the US Naval Observatory, where Harris has a residence with husband Doug Emhoff.

The arrest occurred at about 12pm on Tuesday (local time).

A rifle, a significant amount of ammunition, several gun clips and a "large capacity ammunition feeding device" were found in Murray's car.

Washington DC Police say they arrested Murray in response to an intelligence bulletin originating from Texas, Murray's home state.

Murray now faces a series of charges of carrying a dangerous weapon, carrying a rifle or shotgun outside of a business, possession of unregistered ammunition, and possession of a large capacity ammunition feeding device.

Vice President Harris and Emhoff do not currently live at the Naval Observatory, as it's currently being renovated. The couple are living at the nearby Blair House in the interim.

Earlier on Tuesday, Harris had condemned a shooting at three spas in Atlanta, Georgia that had left eight people dead - six of which were Asian women.

"Our country, the President and I and all of us, we grieve for the loss," she said.

"Our prayers are extended to the families of those who have been killed, and it speaks to a larger issue, which is the issue of violence in our country and what we must do to never tolerate it and to always speak out against it."
