A Spanish man has been arrested after he was caught driving his dead partner's body around Europe to fulfil a wish on his bucket list.

The 66-year-old man was involved in a high-speed car chase near the Catalan village of Jafre when he crashed his Citroen C-3.

The Mirror reported police officers found the decomposing body of an 88-year-old man, believed to be Swiss national Hans Rols Taubenberger, under a blanket in the passenger seat.

A spokesperson for the Mossos d'Esquadra police confirmed the incident to the publication.

"A man who drove around 20 miles the wrong way along the AP-7 motorway in Alt Emporda has been arrested.

"After stopping the vehicle a body was found inside, in the passenger seat next to the driver, which doesn’t appear to present signs of any criminality. An investigation is ongoing."

Taubenberger was thought to have died around three weeks before his body was discovered, although it wasn't clear if he died before the trip or during, the Daily Mail reported.

Police are now investigating credit card transactions to build up a better picture of the road trip.
