An infant has died after being shot by his three-year-old brother inside a Texas apartment, police believe.

The 8-month-old infant was shot in his abdomen on Friday morning (local time), Houston assistant police chief Wendy Baimbridge told reporters.

"It was just one gunshot to the abdomen and unfortunately our little one is deceased."

Two family members inside the apartment drove the infant to the Memorial Hermann Hospital where he later died, police said.

Investigators were initially unable to locate the gun used in the shooting but later found it inside of the vehicle family members used to take the infant to the hospital.

Baimbridge urges parents to take responsibility for their weapons.

"I just want to take this moment and plead with parents and guardians all over to not allow your firearms to be accessible to anyone in the house," she said.

"Lock them up. There are things you can do to render that weapon safe.

"Please pray for this family. This is just a tragic event."

Investigators are still determining if any charges would be filed against the adults.
