A serial conwoman with a history of inventing bizarre identities will be sentenced over a fake au pair scam designed to trick Australian couples.

Samantha Lyndell Azzopardi had been due to appear in the Melbourne Magistrates Court on Wednesday to be sentenced for her most recent fraud.

However her lawyer managed to delay sentencing, telling the court they had been unable to get in contact with a relative Azzopardi wants to live with once she's released.

The 32-year-old has admitted to child-stealing and obtaining property by theft and deception.

She duped Melbourne couple Tom and Jazze Jervis into believing she was a qualified au pair named Harper Hernandez. As she claimed she was from a wealthy American family, she received $6500 working for the couple for six months.

Azzopardi pulled the same trick on a French couple living in Melbourne, this time convincing a different couple she was called Sakah, reports The Daily Mail.

She convinced a third family she was a talent scout called Marley, and took their child on a trip from Melbourne to Sydney.

Azzopardi also tricked a Perth family into believing she was a Russian gymnast called Emily and her entire family had been killed in a murder-suicide.

But it's not just families being tricked by Azzopardi - she's fooled foreign governments too. In 2013, she showed up in Dublin claiming she was a teenage sex trafficking victim from Eastern Europe.

It cost the Irish government hundreds of thousands of dollars before her true identity was revealed and she was deported. She then turned up in Canada, claiming to be a victim of sexual assault and torture.

She's currently in police custody and will appear in court on Wednesday.
