A British nurse accused of killing eight babies and attempting to murder another 10 has appeared in court in the UK, the BBC reported.

Lucy Letby, 31, from Hereford, England is charged with murdering five boys and three girls between June 2015 and June 2016.

She is also accused of attempting to kill another five boys and five girls while working at the Countess of Chester Hospital.

Letby was arrested in 2018 and then again in 2019 on suspicion of murder in relation to the deaths of eight babies and the attempted murder of six others.

Police launched an investigation after the hospital raised alarm because of the high number of deaths between March 2015 and July 2016, the Sun reported.

An internal enquiry was undertaken when medics found premature babies had died following heart and lung failure.

Letby appeared at Manchester Crown Court via video link on May 10, according to the BBC.

The outlet reported she spoke only to confirm her name and that she could hear the proceedings.

The near half-hour hearing dealt with administrative and case-management matters of a trial next year.

Letby will remain in custody and will appear in the same court on May 17.
