A six-year-old boy was shot dead while his mother drove him to kindergarten after an alleged road rage incident in California.

California Highway Patrol spokesperson Florentino Olivera says police officers were called to the scene on Freeway 55 at about 8am on Friday (local time).

When police arrived, they found the boy - identified as six-year-old Aiden Leos - dead in the back seat of his mother's car.

Aiden was rushed to hospital by ambulance but died en-route, following what his family says was a road rage attack, ABC 7 reported.

"There was road rage on the freeway and someone pulled out a gun and shot my little brother in the stomach, and he said, 'mummy, my tummy hurts'," sister Alexis Cloonan said.

"He's only six and he was so sweet. He was a very, very loving boy," she said, as reported by ABC.

The alleged shooter has yet to be located and an investigation is underway.

"If your vehicle has a dashcam, we're asking you, please provide that video," said Olivera, ABC reported. "If you were driving by, you saw something that was not right, call it in - even if it wasn't something major."
