A US woman has died after she was shot at a Black Heritage Festival in south Florida on May 1 at around 9:30pm local time.

Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office confirmed the deceased was 20-year-old Evereonna Sankey from Lee County, NBC2 reported.

Three others were injured after the shooting at the 'Brown Sugar Festival', where 3000 people had gathered.

Officers said they heard gunshots nearby, before responding to the scene to try and save Sankey before she passed away moments later, NBC2 reported.

"Our investigators are following up on all leads and we are determined to bring about closure for this family," Hendry County Sheriff Steve Whidden told NBC2.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of Evereonna Sankey."

Sankey's family told the outlet the woman had just graduated tertiary education to become a registered nurse.

"Why would you come to a festival bringing your gun? You don't need a gun at a festival," Founder of the event Rev. Gwen Patrick-Griffiths told the outlet.

"We've got to stop killing each other. We got to stop it."

She said the event was a great time for everyone until they had to leave.

"We couldn't push them along and get them to go home. Get in your cars and go home. It's over with. We just couldn't get them to do that, " Patrick-Griffiths said.

The Brown Sugar Festival is held annually and is a popular gathering designed as an appreciation of Black Heritage. The event raises money to award scholarships to youth in the community, according to the event's website.

Local authorities have not released information on the suspected shooter or the injured civilians' conditions.

The investigation is ongoing and no arrests have been made.
