Part of an Australian man's ear has been bitten off by an assailant in Adelaide, police allege.

A 24-year-old from New South Wales was walking with his girlfriend and mother in Glenelg, Adelaide around 12:15am on Sunday when they were approached by two men.

A South Australia Police statement said an argument occurred, and the victim was then assaulted by one of the two strangers "who bit off part of the victim's right ear".

The victim was taken to the Royal Adelaide Hospital, where he underwent surgery.

South Australia Police are asking for information about two people captured in CCTV footage.

The suspect is a "Caucasian man" in a black shirt, pictured with "an African male".
