A Texas mother has accidentally shot her own five-year-old son while trying to hit a dog running across the street.

Angelia Mia Vargas, 24, was cycling down a Houston street with her son and another family member when the dog ran out in front of them, ABC13 Houston reported.

Police say Vargas then shot at the dog three times with a small-calibre pistol.

Bruno, a six-month-old boxer puppy, was not injured - but one of the bullets ricocheted and hit Vargas' five-year-old son in the stomach.

The boy is in stable condition at a nearby hospital.

Bruno's owner told ABC13 Houston that Vargas "could have handled it differently."

"She was there, her husband was there, I was there, nothing would have happened. Nothing bad like that."

Vargas was charged with deadly conduct, police saying she'd fired "across a public roadway and in the direction of two occupied houses".

"The owner of the dog was issued a citation of the dog running loose."
