US mother who posed as 13yo daughter at school to prove security weaknesses arrested

A Texas mum has been arrested after she attempted to impersonate her 13-year-old daughter at school to "prove" its security was weak.

Casey Garcia, 30, uploaded a video to Youtube documenting her day at Garcia-Enriquez Middle School.

Garcia signed in using her daughter's ID number and successfully attended classes until the end of the day.

In the video, which has more than 500,000 views, Garcia is wearing a hoodie, glasses and a face mask to disguise herself. She greets who she says is the Principal and goes to several classes, including physical education. She even ate lunch with her mask off.

"I did this to prove a point," she says in the video.

"I proved that I could get through the public school system, it just happened to be public school,  and I made it without any problem.

"We need better security at our schools, this is what I tried to prove, and I don't mean to be curt but I kind of feel like I proved it."

Garcia was not caught out until her seventh class of the day.

She says teachers at the school paid more attention to online students than in-person students.

"They [teachers] never interacted with me, it was always 'hey put your phone away' I wasn't even a person I was just 'hey put your phone away'."

For her "social experiment" to work Garcia dyed her hair dark and used self-tan to make her look more like her daughter.

She said the media in her hometown is making her look "really bad" by saying she just wanted to go to the school for fun.

"I didn't do this to ruffle any feathers, I didn't do this to out the school because I was never going to say what school district or what school it was."

The school's superintendent Jeannie Meza-Chavez told local news outlet KTSM the school was working on its security measures following the incident.

"While there was a breach in security by an individual associated as a parent with the school…we want to assure you that our security measures are being reviewed and evaluated."

Local media reports Garcia was arrested on charges of criminal trespass and tampering with government records.

She was released on a US$7808 bond.
