The US Navy has released spectacular video footage showing a powerful bomb being detonated in the ocean.

The bomb was set off as part of full ship shock trials (FSST) off the coast of Florida on Friday (local time) and was so powerful it registered as an earthquake.

The US Navy said the trial was conducted to test the safety of a new aircraft carrier, the USS Gerald R Ford - "to ensure the ship is hardened to withstand battle conditions".

The testing is done "within a narrow schedule that complies with environmental mitigation requirements, respecting known migration patterns of marine life in the test area", the Navy said.
