Coronavirus: 35 new local COVID-19 infections in Sydney, six not linked to previous cases

New South Wales has recorded 35 new community cases of COVID-19, six of which haven't yet been linked to previous cases.

The latest figures bring the total number of cases in the present outbreak to 261, of which 207 have been linked to the original Bondi cluster. It's the biggest daily increase yet.

"That is a great result and we have seen those testing numbers stay at very high levels consistently during the lockdown, which is exactly what we want to see," said state Premier Gladys Berejiklian.

"While as predicted the number of cases is going up, we are seeing a greater proportion of those cases in isolation, which is exactly what we want to see."

The reported numbers are up to 8pm on Friday night. In that 24 hours, more than 56,000 tests were carried out.

Parts of Sydney went into lockdown on June 25.

"The green shoots are there and are demonstrating the lockdown is having the desired effect and what is pleasing to me was to receive an update about fewer cases being exposed to the community, even though the number of cases is going up," said Berejiklian.

"If you want to get out of this lockdown as soon as we can, we need that trend to continue."

New Zealand paused its travel bubble with the whole of Australia on June 26, with the Delta variant also cropping up in other states.

The present cluster is New South Wales' largest to date.
