Coronavirus Australia: 31 cases in New South Wales, Queensland extends Brisbane lockdown after new cases

There are 31 new cases of COVID-19 in New South Wales while three new cases have been detected in Queensland.

Two new cases have been found in South Australia, including a baby.

As a result of the Queensland cases, which includes a mother and child who have been out in the community, the lockdown is being extended for 24 hours in Brisbane, while it will lift in some other areas, including Noosa, the Sunshine Coast, and Townsville.

Of the 31 cases in New South Wales, Premier Gladys Berejiklian said there were 76,000 tests in the past 24 hours to 8pm. Twenty-seven have been linked to previously confirmed cases.

It means the state has recorded 226 community cases since the Bondi cluster emerged on June 16. Of these, 188 are connected to other cases. There are three cases in ICU, but none require ventilation.

"Thirteen of those cases were active in the community, and I do want to stress that this pretty much reflects the days just before, and the day when we went into lockdown, so what we saw today is a lag of the last couple of days before we went into lockdown," Berejiklian said.

"We are anticipating there could be an increase in numbers over the next few days, I then hopefully early next week we should see the impact of the lockdown really turning and having a positive impact."

South Australia had a COVID-19 scare on Wednesday when four members of the same family, who'd travelled to Adelaide together from the Northern Territory, tested positive. It later emerged a member of the family had worked at the Tanami Desert Mine in the Northern Territory, where community cases have been recorded.

New Zealand has paused its quarantine-free travel bubble with all Australian states and territories. That pause will lift for South Australia, Victoria, Tasmania and ACT on Sunday night, while the pause with other states will be reviewed next week.
