COVID-19: Massive case spike in New South Wales as community outbreak grows by 112

New South Wales' COVID-19 outbreak has worsened again, with 112 new community cases reported on Monday.

State Premier Gladys Berejiklian says most of the new cases are close contacts of previous infections but more than 30 weren't in isolation while infectious.

"We want to stress that the virus is still concentrating in two or three local government areas," she told a news briefing.

There are now 63 COVID-19 cases in Sydney hospitals - 18 of whom are in intensive care.

On Sunday there were 77 new cases, the previous record high for this year. The current NSW outbreak stands at 678 infections.

New cases have been rising daily despite Sydney entering its third week of a hard lockdown. Lockdown measures were toughened over the weekend, restricting residents to within 10km  of home for exercise.

"It is up to all of us to see that number of exposures in the community go down. If you have the mildest of symptoms get tested, stay home," Berejiklian said.
