A 2-month-old baby has spent two days chewing his own hand to survive while lying on his mother's body after she had died.

The baby boy's mum, Danielle Ward was found dead at her apartment in Louisville, Kentucky, and her son lying on her body.

The baby’s grandmother Adriane Wade told local news that she had last seen her daughter and her grandson - Dreseaun - at the house on August 13.

Five days later, Wade received a call from the police asking her to come to the apartment to identify her daughter's body, according to a WAVE3 report.

"That baby that was in the apartment while she was decomposing, his hand was raw from trying to eat to survive," Wade told local news.

Wade couldn’t comprehend how her two month old grandson had found a way to survive.

"God is involved, It's very miraculous,” she says. “He ate his hand raw and [he was] in there for days without survival techniques."

The baby was taken to a hospital to be treated for dehydration and the self-inflicted injuries to his hand

According to police, the mother had died of an overdose.

"I can't believe this is how her week ended," Wade said."I can't believe it happened this quick. Life is so short, and it happened just like that."

Her baby son is expected to make a full recovery and Adriane said she will take both her grandchildren into her care.
