British man seeking 'excitement' stuck in Afghanistan as Taliban take over

A British man on holiday in Afghanistan is now stuck - saying he has "bitten off more than I can chew".

Twenty-two-year-old Miles Routledge took a trip to Afghanistan as it wasn't a "boring" location and he wanted to go somewhere with "excitement".

According to multiple posts on 4chan and a video he streamed on Twitch, Routledge explained why he decided to make the trip.

"I kind of thought, 'where is the most fun country I could go to that isn't boring', as in, where is some excitement and is different," he said. "I don't want to go to London or even Spain.

"I googled the ten most dangerous countries in the world, and then I used that as a shopping list. At the top was Afghanistan.

"I messaged some people, watched some YouTube videos and thought 'this stuff's alright' and I thought 'goofing off in Afghanistan... sounds good'."

He booked his vacation back in May but after finding out his flights weren't refundable, he made the decision to proceed with his trip and flew into Afghanistan on Friday against the advice of the UK Foreign Office.

In a post on social media, Routledge said: "I've bitten off more than I can chew and something has not gone to plan, resulting in this situation.

"There was no convincing me otherwise and I knew the risks. It was a gamble I took that went wrong despite my confidence and jokes."

With the Taliban insurgents taking over the Afghan capital, Routledge has been left stranded.

He found himself unable to fly out of Kabul on Sunday, posting on Facebook that he was in a "bit of a pickle".

In an interview with The Times, Routledge said he didn't regret the trip and "would do it all over again."

"I hate lying around on a beach so I wanted to do something a little bit different," he told the Times.

Routledge is believed to be in a UN safe house in Kabul along with 50 other foreign citizens with the compound staffed by Turkish and British soldiers.
