New South Wales has recorded 239 new community cases of COVID-19 - an increase of 29 from Saturday's reported infections.

State Premier Gladys Berejiklian says at least 32 of those cases were infectious while in the community.

"There have been 3427 locally acquired cases reported since June 16, 2021, when the first case in this recent outbreak was reported," NSW Health said in a statement on Sunday.

"There are currently 222 COVID-19 cases admitted to hospital, with 54 people in intensive care, 25 of whom require ventilation.

"NSW Health administered 21,342 COVID-19 vaccines in the 24 hours to 8pm last night, including 8505 at the vaccination centre at Sydney Olympic Park."

Berejiklian urged other NSW residents to get vaccinated as soon as possible.

"To get to the 70 percent target we need 9.2 million jabs. To get the 80 percent target we need 10 million jabs.

"And we know that vaccination is working against this terrible Delta strain, we know it is effective," the Premier said.

On Saturday, police in Sydney cordoned off the central business district to prevent a protest against a strict lockdown that will last until the end of August.

Officers closed train stations, banned taxis from dropping passengers off downtown and set up checkpoints to disperse groups.

Earlier, health authorities in the neighbouring state of Queensland, which was plunged into a snap lockdown on Saturday, revealed there were nine new community cases of COVID-19 - its highest local infection spike in a year.
