Donald Trump has claimed the US Olympic football team would have won gold if they were not so "woke".

The US Women's National Team (USWNT) won bronze against Australia - but clearly this was not good enough for Trump, who said in a bizarre press release if the team was not "headed by a radical group of Leftist Maniacs, wasn't woke, they would have won the Gold Medal".

"Woke means you lose, everything that is woke goes bad and our soccer team certainly has.

"There were, however, a few Patriots standing. Unfortunately, they need more than that respecting our Country and National Anthem," continued the former US President.

USWNT, along with other football teams, have knelt before games to draw attention to racial injustice - a movement started in 2016 by NFL player Colin Kaepernick.

While they took a knee before the game, they stood for the anthem - raising questions around whether Trump even watched the game he so blisteringly criticised.

"They should replace the wokesters with Patriots and start winning again. The woman with the purple hair played terribly and spends too much time thinking about Radical Left politics and not doing her job!" he continued.

"The woman with the purple hair" is Megan Rapinoe - who scored two goals during the game.

The statement was reportedly emailed to US newsrooms, and no sign of it can be seen on Trump's website.

It's not the first time Trump has criticised athletes. During his presidency, he called NFL players peacefully protesting the anthem by kneeling "sons of bitches" and insinuated Lebron James was dumb, tweeting he was interviewed by "the dumbest man on television, Don Lemon", who "made Lebron look smart, which isn't easy to do".
